Troubleshoot your internet connection
By Don Toivola
Here is something you should try if you are experiencing bad, faulty, or no internet connection. This is usually what tech support will have you do in the first place. So it's best to get this out of the way first and save yourself a phone call. 1. Turn off the modem and router by unplugging them. 2. Wait for 30 seconds, and yes, actually wait a while before you plug anything back in, it needs time to reset the connection. 3. If you have a router, leave it unplugged. Plug in your modem. Wait for all of the lights to go solid. Once all of the lights go solid green, plug in your router (if you have one) and wait for the lights to go solid. 4. Open up your browser and attempt to go to usa.gov or google.com or ebay.com to see if you have a valid internet connection. This usually fixes alot of problems. If it does not work, call your ISP and let them know you have power cycled your modem and you still do not have internet connectivity. |

Unplugging a modem/router is not required, as most modem/routers have a soft reset option, and is less damaging on the hardware than simply pulling the power cord. however I agree that occasionally (soft) resetting your modem/router can resolve internet connection/speed issues.
