There are plenty of ways to generate backlinks that point to your website. Backlinks help your standings on search engines, they bring visitors to your site, and they lead to the generation of sales and revenue. There are also alot of ways to get and maintain backlinks. Some methods will cost you money
Some methods aren't guaranteed
Some methods take alot of time
Some methods give you links not related to your content
Some methods just do not work
But there are ways of getting backlinks that are easy, cost you zero dollars, and are on topic with your website.
I obtain a vast majority of my links through blogging. It's fast, fun, easy, costs me absolutely nothing, and I can target exactly what kind of links I am looking for. Most of the links I get range from Page Rank 1-5. You can really get as many links as you want, as there is no limit to this procedure.
What I do, and How I do it!

Intro: First of all let me start by telling you what I use. I use Firefox, with a plugin called "Seo for Firefox". This enables me to see page rank, alexa rating, and a ton of helpful SEO information right off the search engine. But most importantly it allows me to Export the top 100 searches from Google in order of Page Rank. I also use Microsoft Excel to read the exported file from FireFox.
Information: Blogging! There are roughly two types of blogs, and only one of them are useful to us. "NoFollow" and "DoFollow" are the two types.
In a NutShell: NoFollow blogs use a command called "nofollow". What this does is basically tell the search engines to skip your links and not follow them. So any links you have on a "NoFollow" blog simply are not being counted or followed by search engines. As a matter of fact they are being ignored all together! "DoFollow" blogs are what we are after since they do allow search engines to follow, and list your hyperlinks! This would be the same as going to any website that is on topic, and has a good page rank, and posting your URL right on the site's front page!
Basic Rules for Blogging!

1. Make sure you stay on topic with the blog. If you don't chances are your post will get deleted.
2. Make sure not to list your URL inside your blog. There is a separate section to put your URL in.
3. Be polite, informative, and do try to provide some usefull information.
If you do not follow these rules, your blog along with your URL will be removed and all of your work and time wasted!
How Do I Do This?

1. Go to Google, and type in "blog comments powered by Disqus"
2. It is very important to type it exact, and to include the quotation marks.
3. You will notice there are roughly over 20 million pages that show up on the results.
Disqus uses the "DoFollow" command
Now to reduce that number, and focus on your targeted niche!
4. If your website is about travel you can simplify the search by typing in: (travel "blog comments powered by Disqus") without the ( ) on the sides.
5. This brings your targeted blogs down to about 738,000.
-But How Do I Get The Backlinks? We are getting there ;)
SAMPLE: Click on the first result from the google search. You can now write your comment, along with your name, and URL pointing to your website. Just make sure you include the full URL to your website in the "website" field. Submit your blog, and you have successfully posted your first blog including a link pointing to your website!
Question: That cannot be it! There has to be more involved in it!
Answer: Of course there is, finish the article and bookmark it for future reference!
-Take a look at that first result from google "hxxp://drumsnwhistles.com/2009/03/11/morning-dew/"
6. Shorten it to (site:hxxp//drumsnwhistles.com/2009) and put it into the Google search box minus the ( )
-This will give you a list of 81 related blogs for you to post on, inturn generating you plenty of links! All you have to do is post!
This is where "SEO for FireFox" comes in handy. Make sure you extend the search to the top 100, instead of the top 10. There is an option in the plugin to automatically show the Page Rank of a website. Make sure you set this to "every 1 second". So when you search (site:hxxp://drumsnwhistles.com/2009) it will automatically show page rank. Then you simply export the search results into a CSV file and open it through Microsoft Excel. Once you open it, you can sort it from highest to lowest Page rank. This is all done through the options menu for the Plugin in FireFox!

This only showed you 81 "DoFollow" Blogs to post on. But that was simply using only the first result in the search engine for your given keyword of travel (travel "blog comments powered by Disqus"). You can see how if you went on to the second, third, fourth result etc. you have the potential to get hundreds or thousands of links. And that is just off of the keyword "travel". You do have to put time into it, but it is well worth it in the end.
